The 2023 season was historic for Howard Payne Volleyball. Gerig led the Yellow Jackets to tie their best start since 2013 going 5-0. Throughout the season they beat several teams for the first time in several years, Concordia (2016), McMurry (2016), Hardin-Simmons (2017), Sul Ross (2018). Along with having the most wins since 2013 they made the conference tournament for the first time since 2016. In the first round Howard Payne beat University of Texas at Dallas for their first ever win against UTD and earned their first ever ASC tournament win in program history.

Statistically, as a team in 2023 the Yellow Jackets had the most kills since 2003, assists since 2013, aces since 2013, and digs since 2017. Individually, five Lady Jackets earned All-Conference Honors. Brylee Awbrey and Riley Brittain earned 2nd team honors, while Brooke O’Neal, Makenzie Weddel, and Rylee McAlexander all earned Honorable Mention.

Before HPU, Gerig served as the assistant volleyball coach at Linn-Benton Community College in Linn, Oregon from 2015 to 2019. There he helped guide Linn-Benton to five consecutive winning seasons and amass a 180-44 overall record in that time period.

Under future hall of fame coach Jayme Fraizer, Gerig coached two All-Americans and several All-Conference players while at Linn-Benton.

Gerig also has coaching experience at East Linn Christian Academy in Oregon coaching basketball and baseball.

Josh has deep roots as a Yellow Jacket. While an undergraduate student-athlete at Howard Payne, Gerig was an All-Conference shortstop for the Yellow Jacket baseball team.
